[ooc] Application Info

Character Name: Winry Rockbell
Character Series: FullMetal Alchemist
Age: 16-ish at this point
Item Lost: A Picture from the happy days of her childhood

Personality:Winry is the kind hearted childhood friend of Edward and Alphonse and a good portion of her personality traits come from learning to put up with them. For one, they always keep secrets from her so she's had to learn to accept it and try to carry on. Of course, Winry is naturally very curious and a bit nosy-- she went against Ed's request ad opened up his pocket match behind his back because she was so curious.
She's also a tad bit naive and innocent when compared to her friends, obviously because they go out on the crazy adventures and she stays in dull and eventless Resembool. Referencing a manga event here, she's also very trusting, almost to a fault, since she became a hostage without even realizing it (Beyond volume 15). That's not to say Winry's a total child; her parents did die when she was young and she had to watch Ed and Al suffer after their mom died, then adjust to the tragedy that followed. So it's not like she's blind to the sad things in the world. But she's got a way for coping with it; Winry is pretty good at hiding what she really feels. There are a number of points in the anime where her own wishes conflict with those of her best friends but Winry just bottles it up and stays home to cheer them on. And though she dislikes this post of staying home and waiting she's willing to play her part for their sake and do her best to help them. This is best seen in the extra special care she puts into Ed's automail and the fact that she's willing to travel out of Risembool to meet him and repair his automail (though I'm sure part of the reason for this is simply that she misses Ed and Al). And though she is a strong girl, physically and emotionally, Winry does occasionally break down and start crying, usually in front of poor Ed, giving him more reasons to emo.
Winry is also quite kind hearted. Maybe it comes from the fact her parents were doctors or maybe because her automail skills are to help people but either way, Winry is a very sweet girl (don't mind the wrench throwing). When sad scenes come up in the anime, Winry is often the one trying to offer comfort, even if the person she's comforting is a stranger (namely, the episode where that little girl's cat died). She's got a big sister spirit when it comes to sad things and clearly does not like seeing people alone or upset. Along with this kindness comes the ability to quickly make friends. If Winry sees someone alone and troubled-looking she's likely to march on over there and offer to help and usually leaves with a new friend.
She is also forgiving, to some extent. More than being forgiving she's willing to look passed the past and focus on the present. In the manga version, she specifically mentions that she has not forgiven Scar (who murdered her parents in this version) but Winry is still willing to cooperate with him and treats him basically the same as everyone else.

Worrying is another one of Winry's specialties;she cannot be Winry unless she worries. Because Ed and Al are so reckless, stupid, crazy adventurous they often leave her at home while they go questing for the stone. Winry is aware of how dangerous this is so worries constantly about them. Her concern shows strongest in her special care for Ed's automail. She works hard in mechanics for the sole purpose of helping Ed and because she wants to believe that her good automail protects him. When it breaks and he gets hurt she is thrown into a pit of despair and sobbing (though she quickly bounces back).
So right now I've made Winry out to be a Saint.
So now to get on to the wrenches.
You see, Winry has a temper. Maybe that's an understatement. While she is a kind, concerned, loving friend, she is said friend with a wrench. Winry's trademark in the series is that she tends to solve most problems by beating people with her wrench, which she always has with her. She solved the problem of Al being insensitive to Ed by beating him up. She solved the problem of Ed using alchemy to cheat in an arm wrestling contest by beating him up, beating Al for keeping secrets, beating the other men who cheated, and then giving Ed another smack for good measure. So, in short, she childishly solves certain problems with a wrench to the head. Or simply yelling. Either way it's not the way you learned to deal with social problems in school.
She is also sort of mean to some people, namely Ed, though it is all playful. Winry speaks her mind ("You don't drink milk? No wonder you're so short!"), but this is usually seen around close friends and never around strangers. Her cruelty also seems to be reserved especially for Ed (she's nicer to Al. But who can be mean to Al?) and people who she doesn't like much.
And remember how I said Winry was a bit of a child? Well, that's seen not only in her temper but the fact she is very easily excitable. Particularly when it comes to mechanics and automail. While other girls "EEEEE" over jewelery and dresses, Winry "EEE"s over the latest automail design or that fantastic new wrench meant specifically for dealing with automail joints. It's no secret that while Ed is an alchemy otaku, Winry is a mechanics otaku. She is also very good, especially with Automail, and eventually becomes an authority on the subject. When it comes to anything mechanics-related Winry can be a bit...eccentric? Over the top?Crazy? One of those words.
Through her love for automail we can also see that Winry is prideful in her work and a tad bit competitive. She really wants to be a skilled mechanic, not only for Ed, but for herself. In the manga, she takes many pit stops to work with numerous mechanics to improve her skills.

Moving on. Memento Eden Winry will probably lose her love for automail, if that's okay. It will, of course, come back as soon as she gets a book on it and discovers what it is (or once she sees Ed's arm and he becomes her lab rat), but since her love for automail has so much to do with her grandmother being a famous automail mechanic and the fact she loves worries about Ed I think it'd go under the category of "one of those things she's forget". Most every other detail about her character with be the same, minus the fact that her mechanics skills will start at zero. I want her to start with a love for general mechanics and just forget automail for a while. Please?
Oh. You'll probably see a lot more of "cute and friendly" Winry at the start... unless someone ticks her off. I don't think she'll be comfortable enough to give anyone special treatment (as in, beat them up constantly) for a while... Would that be okay?

History: Winry grew up Risembool, originally with her parents and grandmother Pinako. She was a friend to Alphonse and Edward Elric from a young age and also fairly close to the boys' parents, enough so that she was affected by the death of Trisha Elric. But that's a later part of her past.
Her parents were both doctors and Pinako was a famous mechanic so Winry grew up in a healing environment. When she was young (I don't know her age ;__; Um... I think it was 6-7?) her parents died. They had been surgeons in the Ishbalen War and were killed by Scar. But little Winry remained oblivious to this for a while.
When her parents died she moved in with Pinako and began studying mechanics, while of course maintaining her friendship with the Elrics (who supposedly had a crush on her friend, since they mention fighting over who got to marry her). When she was about 9 Trisha Elric, Ed and Al's mom, died. The two boys became orphans like her and she began treating them like family from then on. As the Elric boys started secretly studying Alchemy to bring their mom back the friends became just a tad bit distant; Winry is often seen whining in the flashbacks about them keeping secrets from her. After their attempt failed she worked with Pinako to give Ed his automail arm and leg. It should probably be noted that she outwardly adjusted to their new bodies very quickly and was very curious, though shy, when it came to Al.

When she was 11, Ed and Al burnt down their home and left Risembool. Winry did not see them for [insert a pretty long time here] because they became so busy with their quest for the philosopher's stone, though they did pop in occasionally for repairs. Her love for mechanics only grew during this time and she became a fairly skilled mechanic. However,Winry did not love the fact they ditched her and secretly hoped they'd eventually giveup and come home. When she came to terms with the fact they were stubborn she vented her loneliness into studying automail. It's even mentioned in one of the novels that she learned to cook stew, which so happened to be the Elrics' favorite food.
Her first in-series intro is after Ed gets his automail "broken, as in, smashed to bits", after a run in with Scar. It is implied that they have not seen eachother in ages and the anime says four years so I'll be using that number too. She fixes Ed's arm and stuff, he leaves, and then he breaks it again in Central, so Winry comes over to repair his automail (again) for him. Of course, we know the only reason it broke was because Winry made a mistake when fixing it but Ed doesn't know that so sssh. Winry is then kidnapped by Hughes to attend his daughter's birthday party and becomes fairly close to his family. It is later mentioned that Winry was delighted to welcomed with open arms and began to feel like her own parents had never left her.

After the party she returns to the hospital, where Ed is staying, and after overhearing an argument between Ed and his brother she sends Al to apologize. Sometime after this she learns that their new travel plans will take them right by Rushvalley, a little town known for its automail, and begs them to take her with them.
In Rush Valley, Ed cheats to win an arm wrestling contest and ends up getting his State Alchemist watch stolen by a girl named Paninya. After a long struggle Winry "captures" Paninya so she can fangirl her automail. Paninya then takes the Resembool trio to Dominic, her mechanic. Winry decides that she wants to be his apprentice but he turns her down. It is around this time that she breaks open Ed's silver pocket watch and sees "Oct. 3. 11" written in it. She storms off to confront him about it but Dominic's daughter (in law?), who is pregnant, goes into labor. It's storming outside and the doctor won't be able to get there fast enough so Winry is forced to use the little medical knowledge she got from her parent's medical books to deliever the baby. Her legs give out from being so stressed and scared afterward and Ed has to carry her to a chair, but drops her when Winry says she opened the pocket watch.Blah blah blah, mush speech, Winry "cries for Ed and Al" and then decides she definitely has to improve her automail mechanic skills to help them. She confronts Dominic again but he says no once more, but he does tell her of an automail mechanic nearby who needs an apprentice and tells her she could come up and "watch him work" every once and a while.
So Winry is ditched at Rush Valley to be an apprentice to some weird guy. Ed and Al keep going.

Insert Edward's encounter with Greed.
Ed gets his automail banged up (AGAIN) and goes to Rush Valley to have it fixed by Winry. Lin shows up and Ed ends up ripping his automail arm off on purpose for bait. Winry comes after Ed with a chainsaw. Oh, and she fixes his arm too.
After that they all go to Centrel together, Lin and Ran Fan included. Lin passes out and is arrested as an illegal immigrant. When they go to pick up their Criminal friend Winry meets Riza Hawkeye, or rather, sees her again (they met when Winry was really young, apparently). When Ed and Winry ask about Hughes Mustang lies and says he just left for the country.
Winry is lost in the plot for a while. No really, she's practically forgotten while Ed and Al go dig up information after learning Hughes was killed and some other stuff. One of the things they learn is that Scar killed Winry's parents. This naturally POs Ed, who confronts Scar in a battle about it after rearriving at Central. Winry had learned of Hughes death and gone to visit his grave with Gracia and Elicia when she hears of her friends' fighting Scar. Afraid that they'll leave her in the same way her parents and Hughes did, Winry runs off to help them. She arrives just as Ed smartly reminds Scar of killing the Rockbells and Winry overhears. She grabs a gun and aims to shoot Scar, who tells her that once she fires she will become his enemy and he'll kill her. Ed, being a good best friend, stops Winry and blocks Scar's attempt to attack her before she pulls the trigger. Al chases Scar off while Ed takes the gun from Winry. He tells her that her hands are meant for saving lives, not killing them, and she breaks down in tears. Though he would clearly prefer to stay and comfort his friend, Ed leaves Winry in the military's care and goes to take care of Scar (who is rescued by Mei, the amazing little Xing girl).

die". Oh. I might also mention that Winry discovers she's "been in love with him [Ed] for along time" around this point. Ed also leaves his coat with Winry after he goes to find Scar and never takes it back. I like to think she took the thing home with her because it's never seen again after Winry packs her bags to go home.

This brings Winry's side of the story to about Volume 15 of the manga, which is also pretty much where the official English translation stops. I've read the scans and online translations up to the present, which goes about seven volumes ahead, but hope you'll be kind and let me add to Winry's manga history in as the official translation goes on. ^^;;; Please?
