Name: Winry Rockbell
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist
Canon Point: Around Chapter 78; she is hanging out at the refugee camp.
Character Goals: Winry is a very tough and resilient girl, so I look forward to highlighting that here. I've enjoyed playing Winry in past horror games, where she was tested and gradually grew even stronger. I'm also just sadistic to my favorites.
Special Concerns: Nothing to note for Winry, really. Thank you for checking~!

Summarize yourself in 20 words or less. I'm Winry Rockbell, granddaughter of Pinako. I'm continuing the family tradition of medicine and automail.
What's your home life like? For a while, it was just Granny and I living in Resembool. We ran an automail shop out of the house, so customers came over a lot to have work done. Resembool is kiiind of out in the boonies and is known for sheep more than anything. So people don't visit us unless they need maintenance. Going in to town is a long trip too, so it could get pretty lonely.
Our most frequent and annoying customers were Ed and Al, so we kept a spare room ready for any of their surprise visits. Growing up, those two were basically family. Since they left Resembool, it's been even more quiet than usual... I had to keep myself extra busy to make up for the noise they weren't making.

Nowdays, I work as an apprentice in Rush Valley. I have a spare room to use, but I honestly spend more time in the machine room cutting parts and assembling prosthetics. Our customers stop in even when they don't need maintenance, so it's kind of like being the party house in a busy neighborhood. I didn't have that in Resembool, so it's actually kind of fun. It makes Rush Valley feel like a home away from home.
Tell me about your favorite people. Well, I definitely love my family. My granny, Pinako, is a renowned automail mechanic. Being able to learn from her is probably any automail fanatic's dream, so I was really lucky. Granny basically raised me myself. She's a strong woman and I like to think I've learned a lot from her, both about automail and about being an independent woman.

As for my parents... They died when I was young. They were selfless doctors who went to a warzone and offered their services to anyway, friend or foe. I'm told they didn't see people as good or bad, but as people and patients. They were killed by one of their patients... I don't think it's because they were wrong. I think it's because that patient was wrong. And I think that patient knows they were wrong too. I miss them, but I need to be strong and carry on what they started. I want to prove to the world that they weren't foolish to choose helping over hurting.

And theeen there's Ed. And Al. Al is the better half of those two, honestly. They're my childhood friends and I don't think a moment goes by where I don't think about them. Don't tell them this, but I initially got serious about automail so they wouldn't accidentally shove me out of their lives. They're both headstrong boys, even Al, and they're too kind to intentionally hurt anyone. I love them both to bits. I worry every day that they're on the road. I know I should probably worry more about the people Ed is probably getting needlessly angry at, but... I dunno. It's hard not to worry about the people you love.

Oh geez. Sorry, I've been talking your ear off. But I can't forget my Rush Valley family either. Is it weird to call them that? Mr Gabriel is a saint to have taken a newbie like me on, and my customers are the kindest, most supportive people ever. It means so much to me that they all trust me with automail. And of course, I love my dog Den too. He's a sweetie. I've had him since I was little. He's looking after Granny for me, so I know she's in good hands. Or paws. You know what I mean.
Was there ever a "turning point" in your life? Yeah. [Winry is being evasive now. She can't talk about Ed and Al's taboo alchemy.] My friend, Ed... had an accident. In the Ishvalen War. He lost his arm and his leg. He and Al always blame themselves for it... and I know that it's not okay for me to say they weren't wrong. What they did... It was wrong. But I think they did it because they felt alone. If they had been able to trust me and rely on me, maybe they would have asked my advice. And I could have stopped them...

Anyway. What's important? It's that things will be different now. I'm going to become a top notch automail mechanic so that they come to me for help, at least with that. And instead of sitting around and being a hostage, I'm going to start proving that I can be trusted. They can tell me their secrets and I really can help them. I'm working hard to prove that.
Do you perform well under pressure? I'd say that I have to. When you're doing automail surgery, there's a lot of blood... lots of screaming, some crying... It's scary. I've gotten better at stealing my nerves for those sorts of things. If I lose my head under pressure then I can't do anything for anyone. It's better if I just put myself aside and do what I can. When things are over, though, I kind of... really need a break. Like when I delivered that baby in Rush Valley? It was like everything around me, except the mother and her child, just vanished during the delivery. And then when it was over... wham. Everything hit me. I couldn't even stand up.
If you went to a deserted island, what two things would you take with you? Whoa, wait. An island? Do you mean the little ones in a lake, or... You're not talking about the ones in the middle of an ocean, are you? I've never even SEEN the ocean..! Would I want to leave? What are they like? I've heard the water is bad, so maybe the first thing I'd need is... oh, but... hm... Okay! How about I bring Ed and Al? Thing One and Thing Two? Do they count? Then if it's an annoying island, we can figure it out together. But if it's one of those tropical vacation kinds, they can have a short break. Plus, you did say I went to the island. Like on my own. I'm sure I wouldn't go anywhere dangerous.
How do you normally spend a Friday night? Ahhh... Geez, way to call me out. I usually try to get my automail orders for the week done before Saturday morning, so I'm prooobably working. I know, I'm kind of boring compared to other girls my age. But once I have all of my work done, I can use Saturday and Sunday for me. I can make inventory pick-ups for Mr Gabriel and look around Rush Valley, and have a full hour to call Granny. It's easier to enjoy those little things when you don't have tons of work looming over your head.
If a genie granted you a single wish, what would you wish for? For Ed and Al to find a way to get back to normal. Not an automatic fix... just a way. A clear path that they can go down, safely. If everything was just basically fixed with no sacrifice, I don't think they would feel satisfied. They might just take off again to do something noble, to ease their burden. I want them to feel whole again, and not just their bodies.
Do the ends justify the means? I don't think so. The path you choose is going to affect everyone else on that road. And there's never really an end to anything anyway. It's just a temporary stop. You don't want the reason your journey keeps going on to be because someone comes after you.
How did you feel about this survey? It was okay? It feels nice to have a heart to heart every once and a while. Sorry that I talked your ear off... And good luck interviewing any boys. Geez, bet that must be like pulling teeth.

Player's Choice
Please choose one of the following for your second sample. Aim for 250-500 words, though we'll accept longer samples.
Winry had adjusted to her new life... well enough. She couldn't say that the instances of monster attacks and horrific tricks were really up her alleyway or that she would ever be used to it, but she had... 'adjusted'. It was the word she had chosen to describe how she was learning to roll with the punches thrown at her and keep a grip on herself during the chaos.

But it was over, for the time being anyway. Hours had passed and the adrenaline that kept Winry on her feet and from allowing herself to be killed had worn off. She sat in her apartment, alone and with nothing to hold her sanity together. Nothing but the radio, which she was pointlessly tinkering with in an attempt to soothe her fried nerves.

"Yup... still working... Guess there really aren't any signals for it to pick up..." Her hands had started shaking a few minutes ago. Horrific images were replaying in her head, digging into her memory so that she could never forget. Some of them made her feel nauseated, but in general they were just chipping away at her cool. Even though she had confirmed that the radio was in working order, Winry routinely took it apart to soothe herself in these moments. When she was by herself and on the verge of screaming or crying, she would grab the radio and fiddle with it.

Slowly, Winry began to calm down. Her hands weren't shaking so badly that she could not handle the screwdriver and her mind eased up when filled with thoughts of mechanics. Wondering if there was any way to make the radio more useful or cut out useless bits so it ran more efficiently at a smaller size. Winry took a deep breath and set it down, standing up on legs that were no longer trembling.

"There... okay. Enough fooling around." She released the breathe and headed for the door. Her hands hesitating when she grabbed the doorknob, mind reeling over comforts and logic that would prevent another freak out. Then she twisted it to head outside. "I can do this."

Character Name: Winry Rockbell
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Age: 16
Sex/Gender: Female
Living Preference:
Canon Point:
History:
Personality:
Winry was is the childhood friend of the heroes, Edward and Alphonse, and a lot of her personality traits stem from having to put up with them. Both before and after the failed human transmutation.
Even when they were kids, going to school together and eating dinner at each other's houses, Winry had to put up with how her best friends weren't always honest with her. It takes a conversation with Hughes for her to come to terms with the fact that they won't always come to her for advice or help, and to accept that all she can do is wait for them to need her and be ready to support them.

Supporting is something Winry does well. Whether she is offering emotional support or maintaining automail, Winry is almost always looking to help those she cares about. She claims to cry for the brothers, since neither of them will cry themselves, and then pulls herself together to clean Al's armor or service stupid Ed's automail. Even outside of the brothers, Winry is helping her grandmother run the family Automail business and she takes special care with helping her customers in Rush Valley.
If there is a problem then Winry will want to fix it, even if she is scared or unsure of herself. Also in Rush Valley, Winry delivered a baby because she couldn't just let the mother and child's lives hang in jeopardy while they waited for a doctor. When she was being held hostage it was Winry who proposed the dangerous plan that freed the Elric's hands, not any of the boys. If it can help people then Winry can be very gutsy and brave, taking risks where no one else seems to be brave enough to take them.

Helping and healing are also strong points to her character, especially in a horror setting. It is a canon fact that Winry cannot seem to take lives. She can point a gun, rest her finger on the trigger, have a million good reasons to pull, and want to pull the trigger, but she can't. Especially not now, after hearing Edward tell her she has "hands for saving lives." Winry is seen to apply this to her life after Edward voices the thought, returning to her job with a new respect for what she does and then later healing the very man she had so badly wanted to kill.

Kindness is one of Winry's strengths. For all of the crap she's gone through, she remains a very bright and cheerful person. Sure, she beats the crap of Ed and even Al on occasion, but she doesn't show that violence to anyone else. Winry bonds with the Hughes family so fast that she is practically part of the family, and she becomes good friends with Paninya and all of her Rush Valley customers. She even starts with a good impression of Kimblee, because Winry isn't the type to jump start to negative conclusions (also, Kimblee is a good actor).

So it is somewhat ironic that Edward is the one to tell Winry her hands are for healing, because he is the only character that she habitually beats up. For all of her nice traits, Winry is still short tempered. In serious matters, like with Scar, Winry can put on a strong face and bear the burden of unhappiness and hatred rather than seeking revenge, but heaven forbid you should break her automail. She mauls Ed with a wrench so many times that it has become her trademark. Even as a kid, Winry would take matters into her own hands and even the score if she felt she needed to. The novels mention an incident where Edward threw a bucket of bugs at the girls in his class. Winry then picked up every last bug, put them back in the bucket, and dumped it on his head. She may be above revenge when it is serious, but she is not above it in regards to petty things like bugs and automail.

Winry is also shown to be very materialistic. She does not maintenance Ed's automail for free and actually pesters her childhood friend about owing her extra fees for traveling service trips. When Ed asks why Winry can't go to Rush Valley on her own, Winry bluntly mentions that she wants Ed to pay for her ticket. Money is a concern for Winry and she does seem to enjoy making it, and then making Ed spend his money. And when Ed is buying, Winry is shameless. If it was anyone else then she would show modesty.
Winry is also an abnormal shopper. While other girls squeal over diamonds, Winry squeals over automail. She is also shown to put a lot of value in material things. In the first Anime, Winry gets emotional when she buys Ed some oil for his automail because it's a physical gesture of kindness. In a manga short, Ed and Al buy Winry a new pair of earrings to make up for troubling her. Rather than switch out the earrings, Winry gets enough piercings that she can wear every pair they buy her at once. She even went as far as piercing her own ears the very day she got a new pair.

For all of her spending and using the Elrics as her personal bank account, Winry is a hardworker. Kimblee comments like a creep that it's an attractive quality. Winry works hard on her automail in particular because she knows it helps people, specifically Ed and Al. She begs Dominic for an apprenticeship because she wants to make Ed more effective automail and she works "like a busybee" at her job. Customers go as far as saying they prefer not only Winry's kindness and cute girl aspect, but how her end product turns out compared to other mechanics. She uses her trips to Briggs not as a holiday but as a chance to study Northern automail, and there's the simple fact that she is a 15 (now 16) year old girl working away from home at a professional automail shop doing hands-on work that people pay big money for. She isn't just a hardworker. She's talented.

Special Abilities:
Absolutely no super powers. However, Winry is a skilled automail mechanic, though it should be noted that she cannot perform the required surgery on her own and therefore cannot give anyone automail on the fly. She can, however, upgrade and repair existing automail and similar technology. Winry also has basic medical knowledge (such as delivering babies and general first aid) and enough medical expertise that she can at least assist in surgeries (read: hand tools, manage bleeding, and not pass out).

The manga and anime adaptions also suggest that Winry is able to tinker with a repair other mechanical objects. She claims to have improved an oven in the first Anime and makes one from scratch in the manga 4komas, so can probably learn to repair and work with some existing devices. However, Winry has no knowledge of digital technology and will be useless on that front.

Finally, Winry's current canon point has her growing up. She used to settle for waiting on the sidelines, but Winry has now taken her first steps into adventure mode. She says herself that she can't and won't just keep waiting anymore, but that she wants to be actively involved in helping her best friends. This inspired her to put herself in a dangerous situation to give them more freedom, orchestrate her own kidnapping, and now begin traveling through snowy hell. Granted, Winry has not done this kind of adventure-y action hero nonsense before. She's new at it. But she is adapting very well, which should help her to not immediately crack under the pressure of a horror setting.

002 → Terrible Feelings

[ Winry has been coping pretty well with her new environment. Some mornings still feel strange, when she wakes up in a house that isn't hers, but she's learning to adapt. She's even gotten into the hang of school and sometimes pays attention.
But one thing is bothering her. There's one thing about Mayfield that's been tugging at her worse than anything. She's been doing her best to ignore it and logic her way out of it but everyday is a new reminder.
]

PHONE → filtered away from the Elrics ]
Hey... this is only my second time using the phone like this, so sorry if I mess up... I was wondering... Someone from home, that I know is... is dead, is here now... I was wondering how often that sort of thing happened and... and also...  [ she takes a deep breath ] It's stupid, but I think... I think I'm jealous. It's really so dumb... But I wish... I wish my parents could come back too.

I thought I'd gotten over this. It's wrong of me to wish the dead could come back, I know that, but... [ Winry pauses, realizing that she has started rambling. The rambles are going in circles and she's just being a bother at this point. ] Sorry, I guess this was silly to talk about. I think what I want to know is... if someone can scold me for being jealous of my friends for having their mom back when I don't have mine...

ACTION → high school ]
[ Despite the depressing phonecall, Winry is mostly in high spirits when she attends school that day. When lunchtime comes around she'll be actively looking to sit with new people and make friends, so don't be surprised if she approaches you. ]
Hey there! Is this seat taken?

ACTION → christmas tree ]
[ And after school, after going to buy some extra food to store away at the house, Winry will stop by the giant Christmas tree. It's her first time celebrating Christmas, let alone seeing such a giant tree covered in lights, so she's just going to stand there to stare. ]
I never knew lights could come in so many colours... [ She tilts her head thoughtfully. ] I wonder if I could use this technology on automail somehow...? An automail rainbow flashlight...? ... I'd make that just to see Ed walk around like a Christmas tree. [ she snickers. ]

001 → Arrival

[ Waking up in a strange house that was not her own was not how Winry wanted to start her day. She immediately rolled out of the bed and scrambled about in confusion with a very realistic list of priorities, including "Whose pajamas are these?!" and "Wh-who changed my clothes?!". And all ending with a pajama-clad girl picking up the nearest phone and just... dialing. She really isn't sure to call. ]

U-um... Hey! Hey there, wh-whoever you are, uh... I think I've been kidnapped! I'm in a strange room with someone else's clothes on a-and this is just really not good.

[ hesitation. Winry replays everything she just heard in her head and realizes how stupid she sounds when in a panic. ] S-sorry, you know what? Wrong number. [ And now she's preparing to call someone else, hoping to form sentences better next time and sound more believable. ] What do I do, what do I do... Why would anyone kidnap me? Aaah, and who changed my clothes for me? Ew ew ew, I can't believe this is happeing!

Geez... that idiot... he can never just stay still, can he? Always leaving for some reason or another... and for no good reason, as usual!

O-oh well. I guess, this isn't a time where I want for Ed to come back anyway. I don't need that moron in Mayfield to survive here! We'll be just fine, right, Den? [ Den can be heard whimpering a bit and Winry pets his head. ]

Hey, Kay! Let's watch that DVB or whatever you call it! And I'm making supper tonight! What do you guys want? Maybe I'll make beef stew and apple pie! Th...that'll show him...

[ action - Neutron Diner ]
[ Winry might be trying to act like it doesn't bother her, but Ed's droning has hit her hard. So at work, Winry is being a bit less attentive with her job than usual. You  might notice this waitress, who is usually good on her rollerblades, falling and crashing a lot more than usual and completely zoning out while she takes your order.

Later that day, after her shift, she'll be buying a milkshake and hamburger of her own and sitting alone. And occasionally sighing sadly and just staring ahead. ]

[ It's been a while since Winry got droned, but she's finally snapping out of it. A bit confused, since she doesn't recall doing anything that would deserve a droning so it isn't her first thought. ]
Hm... It's hard to believe, but I've really been here for a long time, haven't I? I'll be turning 18 soon, most likely... Kind of a creepy thought. I had really hoped to finish my apprenticeship before I turned 18 so I could work properly alongside Granny... but I guess that's not happening... B-but, more to the point! That just occurred to me because I was looking at the calendar today and I noticed something sort of weird.

Is it me, or did time go by really really fast? I have no idea what happened this month... Did something happen that I should know about?

[ Action ]
[ After her phonecall, Winry can be found walking around Mayfield with her dog, Den. Poor dog has been absolutely traumatized by Winry's droning and is very relieved to have her back to normal. And excited to be on a walk with her. You might notice Winry and Den either
A) Walking around Mayfield, with Den on a loose leash. He might come up to sniff your hand as you walk by or bark at you if he's seen you before.
or
B) At the park, where Winry is playing fetch with him. Once again, he's prone to approaching people and will do so more freely since he is off the leash. Also, look out for flying tennis balls, because Winry's aim with something so light and un-wrench-like is a bit bad. She might hit you. ]

[ This is very late, but Winry got a regain from the Valentines Event! But she's kept it outside. Winry woke up and found her dog from home, Den, had been brought for her. And though at first she tried to keep Den outside, so as to not bother her family, she's beginning to feel sorry for her friend. ]

[ phone]

Um... Hey, Keiichi? Kay? Can we talk about something? I kind of... I kind of got my dog from home a while ago. Neither of you are, like, allergic or anything, are you?

And hey, Edward! Den's here. He'd probably like to see you, so come over. [ that's an order, not a request. ] There are some things I want to talk to you about....

[ action ]
[ Well, Den can't exercise in a tiny yard. So Winry will be walking him around Mayfield in the morning and evening. She has yet to buy him a leash though, because who needs a leash for their dog in the countryside?, so Den may wander away from Winry and go sniff around your lawn, despite Winry's protests.

Den will also approach anyone that they walk by and sniff their hands. He doesn't meet new people very often. ]

[ phone - filtered away from Edward ]

Hey, I'm not sure if anyone's noticed, but Ed's back now. He's been back for a while actually... I know it's awful and selfish of me, but I'm really glad to have him here too, but... He doesn't remember being in Mayfield. It's like that year we spent here never happened for him... It's confusing... I'm not used to being the one that knows more than him about stuff like this, and so much happened, I'm not sure how to treat him now that's he's forgotten...

Has something like this happened to anyone else? Having someone they knew here forget ever being in Mayfield?

[ phone - filtered to Edward ]

Hey, um... [ she's noticeably hesitant, not sure why she's even calling. Other than because she's worried. Gah, talking to him is harder than usual now. ]  How're you settling in? Thought I'd check in. Have you met your family yet? I hope they're keeping you fed and everything...

[ action ]

[ Winry has started hanging back after school as long as she can, usually finishing assignments in her classroom or wandering through the library before she heads home. You might notice her;
A) Staying late after school, even when everyone else has gone home.
or
B) Poking around the library curiously.
Housemates might also notice her new pattern. ]
